BARGETTO WINERY has produced handcrafted wines in the Santa Cruz Mountains since 1933 with a focus on cool climate varietals that reveal an intensity of fruit flavor and natural acidities.

The Bargetto winemaking heritage began with brothers Phillip and John Bargetto who emigrated from Castelnuovo Don Bosco, a small town in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. They brought with them years of winegrowing experience when they established the Bargetto Winery in 1918 on the banks of Soquel Creek in California. Phillip was the first to depart Italy in 1891 at the age of seventeen. In the early years, he worked in the vineyards of Casa Delmas Winery in Mountain View and in 1909 was joined in California by his brother, John. By 1913, they had become partners in an apple ranch near Zayante in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where they grew and sold fruits and vegetables.

During Prohibition (1919-1933), the brothers continued to make wine for family and friends, while they continued to sell produce to local customers. They also grew apples at the family ranch in Soquel. When Prohibition ended in 1933, the brothers devoted more time to the wine business. They began a wine wholesale business, while they continued to sell produce wholesale.

Phillip Bargetto passed away in 1936 and John was left the sole owner of the business throughout the 1940s and 1950s. He continued to produce wine and sell wholesale and retail. He was joined by his sons Ralph and Lawrence during these years.

The Next Generation
The Bargetto Family winemaking heritage continued with John's son Lawrence during the 1960s and 1970s. He introduced modern technology such as stainless steel fermentation, barrel aging, and added new Santa Cruz Mountains varietals such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He also created the “Chaucer’s” line of dessert-style wines.

Today
The third generation of Bargettos now directs the operation of the winery wihich represents the oldest continuous-operation winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Their pioneering spirit continued with the establishment of Bargetto Regan Vineyard Estate, near Corralitos in 1992. Here, cool-climate varietals like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Grigio are carefully nurtured to produce estate wines. In keeping with the family heritage, the winery has also begun to experiment with northern Italian varietals grown in its estate vineyard. The third generation of Bargettos now directs the winery operation.

Gewurztraminer, Monterey

The 2000 vintage displays the pleasing attributes that Gewurztraminer has to offer. Floral aromas with hints of grapefruit entice the adventurous taster to flavors of spice and citrus. The wine finishes clean and crisp with a tinge of sweetness. An excellent balance fruit, acidity and residual sugar are achieved. With an excellent source of grapes from Ventana Vineyard, and Varner Vineyard, the 2000 Gewurztraminer, Monterey is an exceptional vintage.

Chardonnay, Central Coast

The intention of the 2000 vintage was to find top quality Central Coast fruit that highlights the bright citrus and pineapple aromas expected from cool climate Chardonnay. For added complexity 30% of the vintage was aged in American and French Oak barrels. American Oak adds a delicate citrus blossom and rose petal quality to the wine while French Oak enhances the vanilla and banana oil components that are associated with the barrel fermentation. The wine was aged an additional three months in oak to further develop the fruit and oak nuances. Aromas of grapefruit and pineapple abound. Hints of rose petal and sweet oak interplay to add roundness to the expansive nose of the wine. The rich aromas lead to full flavors of citrus and apple. Sweet wood fills out the middle of the wine, giving way to a clean, crisp finish.

Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains,Regan Estate

The Mt. Eden clone of Chardonnay has a significant impact in the rich quality of this estate grown wine. Paul Masson brought this unique clone of Chardonnay to the Santa Cruz Mountains in the 19th Century from the Corton-Charlemagne Vineyard in Burgundy. To this day the clone remains almost exclusively in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Mt. Eden clone Chardonnay lends itself quite well to the cool marine influenced climate of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The ripe tropical fruits, which abound in the 2000 vintage, are in perfect balance with the lingering smoky sweet oak finish. Firm natural acidity gives the wine structure to allow for cellaring. This vintage is one of the best to come from Regan Vineyards.

Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

There are 3 clones of Pinot Noir planted at the Bargetto Regan Vineyard Estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains: Dijon, Pommard and Martini. All three clones bring important attributes to the wine. Dijon develops the distinctive cherry and plum aromas. Pommard adds high notes of perfume. The Martini clone brings depth to the color and structure of the wine. The resulting wine shows bright fruit and perfume aromas with a silky smoothness to the body. The finish is extracted and shows soft oak vanillin. This wine, while enjoyable now, should age gracefully for 3-5 years.

Merlot, California

The San Ysidro Vineyards and the Regan Vineyards once again provide a luscious Merlot. Cool morning coastal fog keeps daytime temperatures very moderate and allows for a long growing season. San Ysidro Vineyards always develop the bright ripe cherry fruit that Merlot is known for and the Regan Vineyards Merlot lends richness to the palate. Ripe fruit carries throughout the flavor. The finish is silky and supple with a hint of smoky oak rounding out the wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon, California

This Cabernet Sauvignon expresses bright aromas of raspberry and ripe cherry with a delicate hint of perfume. The Carignane portion adds violet and lavender to the complex aromas. Flavors follow with ripe cherry, cassis and chocolate and soft oak adds to the supple finish. After aging 14 months in a combination of French and American oak, the wine was bottled unfined and only lightly filtered.

Reserve Merlot, Santa Cruz Mountains, Regan Vineyards

The Regan Vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains had another outstanding vintage in 1999. The Merlot from Regan Vineyard displays intense aromas of berries, briar and violets. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds a cassis impression with hints of chocolate. The flavors are full and robust yet the Merlot suppleness comes through in the finish. Sweet vanillin and oak rounds out the wine. This truly is a 'Reserve' styled wine.
